Ovarian pain just before your period is most often associated with fluctuating hormone levels, natural for the second half of the menstrual cycle. In this phase of the cycle, much more estrogen is secreted than progesterone. This causes the characteristic symptoms of PMS. In addition to ovarian pain and lower abdominal pain, they also include drowsiness, irritability and mood swings.

Pre-period ovarian paincan also be caused by endometriosis or by ovarian cysts. In some women, larger cysts feel crowded and stinging on one side of the abdomen. Large cysts are usually accompanied by frequent pressure on the bladder, menstrual disorders or pain during intercourse.

Ovarian pain that occurs several days before your period has another reason - it is ovulation. The prickly pain accompanies the moment when the egg is released from the ovary. In this case, the right or left ovary hurts alternately in the following menstrual cycles. Sometimes the pain is also accompanied by brown vaginal discharge.

Pain in the ovary before perioddoes not always have similar symptoms. It is mild in some women and passes quickly in othersis strong, described as a sticking point on one or both sides of the lower abdomen.

Severe ovarian pain before your period can be relieved with over-the-counter pain relievers. Medicines containing paracetamol or ibuprofen are safe and effective. You can also use antispasmodics. Warm compresses and gentle self-massage will help with slight ovarian pain.

It is also worth following the methods recommended for PMS, such as a diet rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals, especially magnesium. Herbal teas and herbs for painful periods, such as chamomile or mint tea, can also help.

Pain in the ovary before your period: when to see a doctor?

Pre-period ovarian pain rarely requires a doctor's consultation. There are exceptions, however. It is worth visiting a doctor when the pre-period ovarian pain is extremely severe, lasts a long time, or does not decrease despite over-the-counter medications.

Consultation with a doctor is also recommended when the ovarian pain before the period is accompanied by other disturbing symptoms, e.g. frequent and painful pressure on the bladder, vomiting with an unpleasant smell, vomiting, weakness, a clear change in the menstrual cycle or pain during intercourse.
