Doctors from the Gdańsk clinic have reconstructed the mandible using an autologous transplant of fat-derived stem cells. This is the first procedure of this type in Poland and it gives hope to many patients. What is the reconstruction of the mandibular bone tissue with the use of this type of transplant?

Doctors from the Gdańsk clinic have reconstructed the mandible using an autologous transplant of fat-derived stem cells. The aim of the procedure was to prepare the bone bed for the planned dental reconstruction with the use of implants in a 22-year-old patient with a congenital lack of dental buds, who had significant bone tissue deficiencies, which made it impossible to apply implantological treatment and restore the teeth on implants.

Adipose stem cell transplant for bone regeneration - what is it?

The treatment consisted in collecting adipose tissue by means of liposuction, from which stem and regenerative cells were obtained using Cytori technology. Then, they were transplanted into the areas of bone deficiency in the mandible, while performing a bone reconstruction procedure using the most modern reconstructive materials.Autogenous stem cell transplantcontains only the patient's own cells, so there is no risk of rejection by the patient's body. Therefore, it is qualitatively and functionally incomparably better solution, giving much better prospects for maintaining rehabilitation effects.

The expected effect of using stem cells is to obtain a stable bone bed in a very short time with the restoration of the geometric shape and physiological function of the bone, including its blood supply and vascularization, and the integration of the newly formed bone with the entire body.

- Stem cell transplants are an absolute breakthrough and a technological leap into the future in dentistry, opening completely new therapeutic possibilities related to the possibility of obtaining completely natural bone matter, blood supply and innervation, operating in the system of the entire skeletal, circulatory and nervous. In dentistry, stem cells have a valid foundation and a much broader spectrum, taking into account autografts as wellin diseases characterized by soft and hard tissue defects, congenital or acquired. They can also become an effective solution in the case of periodontitis, which affects about 30% of the population. Thus, stem cell transplantation is an innovative method of dental rehabilitation and a chance to achieve spectacular results for many patients for whom the way to a beautiful smile has so far been closed. If stem cells bring such satisfactory results in other fields of medicine, then dentistry also has a chance of success, "said Dr. Violetta Szycik, Scientific Director of the VIVADENTAL Institute.
