Bathing in the fountain is great entertainment for children, sometimes also for adults. However, is it safe? Here are 11 reasons that should keep us from entering the city fountain.

  1. There may be various kinds of dirt and debris in the city fountain. Rubbish, i.e. foil, paper or even bottles are not the most dangerous here. Animal droppings, such as birds, domestic or wild animals, often swim in the water. Let's not forget that the fountain can contain physiological impurities excreted by children bathing in it, as well as hair, saliva and even vomiting.
  2. In water bodies that are closed, there are microbes, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, algae and fungi. The most popular are, among others staphylococcus bacteria, salmonella, fecal bacteria (E.coli, enterococci), blue oil bacilli, dermatophytes, parasitic protozoa from the cryptosporidium and giardia groups, enteroviruses and noroviruses.
  3. The city fountain is often used as a toilet for the homeless.
  4. People with different levels of personal hygiene enter the fountain. Sometimes they take care of their physiological needs there.
  5. People struggling with various diseases, e.g. mycosis, can bathe in the fountain.
  6. There may be heavy metals in the water in the fountain.
  7. The water in the fountain, although it often looks clean at first glance, is in fact very dirty and, importantly, is not tested!
  8. Water circulates in a closed circuit and is not replaced with fresh water.
  9. A bath in the city fountain can have a number of unpleasant consequences, such as malaise, diarrhea, vomiting, poisoning, conjunctivitis, ear inflammation, body rash, athlete's foot. Infection with streptococci can cause pneumonia. Infectionstaphylococcal disease can lead to bronchitis, pneumonia or tracheitis. In turn, escherichii bacteria can cause inflammation of the bladder.
  10. The consequences of bathing in the city fountain can be so serious that you will need to see a doctor or stay in the hospital.
  11. You have to remember that bathing in the city fountain is not allowed. If the city or commune office provides information about the prohibition in the regulations, the police or municipal police have the right to intervene. Breaking the ban may result in a ticket.
