Hot weather conditions encourage people to look for various forms of refreshment. Water reservoirs, including city fountains, attract crowds. Bathing in the fountain is great entertainment for children, sometimes also for adults. However, is it safe? Here are 11 reasons that should keep us from entering the city fountain.
- There may be various kinds of dirt and debris in the city fountain. Rubbish, i.e. foil, paper or even bottles are not the most dangerous here. Animal droppings, such as birds, domestic or wild animals, often swim in the water. Let's not forget that the fountain can contain physiological impurities excreted by children bathing in it, as well as hair, saliva and even vomiting.
- In water bodies that are closed, there are microbes, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, algae and fungi. The most popular are, among others staphylococcus bacteria, salmonella, fecal bacteria (E.coli, enterococci), blue oil bacilli, dermatophytes, parasitic protozoa from the cryptosporidium and giardia groups, enteroviruses and noroviruses.
- The city fountain is often used as a toilet for the homeless.
- People with different levels of personal hygiene enter the fountain. Sometimes they take care of their physiological needs there.
- People struggling with various diseases, e.g. mycosis, can bathe in the fountain.

Infection with streptococci can cause pneumonia. Infectionstaphylococcal disease can lead to bronchitis, pneumonia or tracheitis. In turn, escherichii bacteria can cause inflammation of the bladder.
