Mammotomy biopsy, with a single puncture, allows you to collect several pieces of tissue for histopathological examination within several minutes. It is used in the diagnosis of breast cancer, commonly known as breast cancer. It is the most common malignant neoplasm diagnosed in Polish women. What is a mammotomy biopsy and how should I prepare for it?

Mammotomy breast biopsy (MMT)is one of the most modern methods that allows you to determine the type of abnormality detected in the mammary gland. This is otherwise known as a vacuum-assisted core-needle mammotomy, or MMT, which was introduced in 1999. It is used in oncological diagnostics and in order to diagnose neoplastic changes in the breast.

Mammotomy biopsy - indications for the test

A woman is referred for a mammotomy biopsy when the doctor notices any abnormalities in the breasts during palpation, ultrasound or mammography, e.g.

  • changes in the structure of the breast,
  • skin color,
  • Is there a leak from the nipple.

MMT biopsy is used to diagnose small changes that do not exceed 2 cm on ultrasound or mammography images and are not palpable during palpation.

MMT can detect breast cysts, suspicious changes that may indicate cancer or fibroadenoma smaller than 2 cm.

Mammotomy biopsy is performed in the best cancer centers in the country and is reimbursed by the National He alth Fund.

Mammotomy biopsy - the course of the examination

Importantly,a woman must have a breast imaging diagnosis performedbefore MMT examination. You should not prepare yourself properly for the examination.

The tools necessary for the MMT biopsy consist of a needle with a rotary knife, thanks to which we can obtain fragments of the lesion.

In turn, the needle is connected to an apparatus that creates a negative pressure, and thus the lesion is placed in the biopsy channel. The sucked-in tissue is cut by the rotary knife, and the fragments obtained are sucked out of the needle.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. A small incision is made at the site of the lesion, where a biopsy needle is inserted, with the help of which samples are taken for histopathological examination.

Thanks to the rotary needle, with one insertion, you can pick up material from several changed places. Several fragments of - diseased - tissue are collected within a few minutes.

The incision site is small and does not even require a seam. After the procedure, the patient is wearing a plaster and a pressure dressing with a cooling compress. The procedure takes about 20-30 minutes and there is no need to stay in hospital.

Before the test, please inform your doctor about:

  • blood coagulation disorders,
  • taking anticoagulants,
  • allergic to anesthetics,
  • diabetes
  • Are you pregnant.

Mammotomy biopsy - possible complications

MMT is a minimally invasive test, after which complications are extremely rare.

The most common of these is a hematoma that appears at the injection site. The injection site may also be difficult to heal or become infected.

Mammotomy biopsy - advantages

MMT biopsy is performed under ultrasound guidance, thanks to which it is possible to precisely puncture the changed tissue. In addition, it enables puncturing of small lesions, imperceptible even on palpation.

You do not need to perform several punctures to get a specimen for histopathological examination - one puncture is enough.

And most importantly, a mammotomy biopsy (performed under ultrasound control) gives almost 100 percent. diagnostic certainty.
