- 1. Who dies of COVID more often: women or men?
- 2. Coronavirus victims and comorbidities
- 3. How old were the victims?
Although statistics no longer provide information on the sex and age of people who died from COVID-19 as of October 10, the Ministry of He alth recently released data on deaths caused by the pandemic. Who dies more often: women or men? What was the age of the youngest victim?
Since the beginning of the pandemic announcement, the Ministry of He alth has been publishing daily data on new infections and deaths among Poles caused by the SARS CoV-2 coronavirus. However, as the number of deaths began to increase drastically, it was decided to stop giving accurate information about those who died from COVID-19. The ministry motivated this with "an extended form of announcements".
Now that the number of deaths has already exceeded the10,000(this happened on November 14), the Ministry of He alth has agreed to release detailed information on the victims of the pandemic. These data are surprising in some cases.
1. Who dies of COVID more often: women or men?
There should be no surprise here, as already at the beginning of the pandemic it was clear that men were more susceptible to the severe course of COVID-19. Why is this happening? Scientists explain this, among others differences in the functioning of the immune system, as well as in lifestyle. You can read more about it here>>>
Interestingly, in March in Italy, the disproportion between the deaths of women and men was very large, ranging from 30 to 70 percent. In our country it was slightly smaller - among the deceased there were42 percentwomen and58 percentmen (as of November 13). This is illustrated in the graph below.
2. Coronavirus victims and comorbidities
In the context of the coronavirus, a lot is said about comorbidities that increase the risk of severe COVID-19. These include, among others :
- hypertension
- diabetes
- ischemic heart disease
- atrial fibrillation
- kidney failure
- dementia
- PoChP
- cancer in the last 5 years
- heart failure
- obesity
- respiratory failure
According to the Ministry's statistics, most of the victims ( 8075 ) had comorbidities, but unfortunately the Ministry of He alth does not collect accurate data on thissubject.
However, people not burdened with any comorbidities are also dying - until November 13th they were1424 . So far, it is not known why this is so. Some people hypothesize a cytokine storm, i.e. an excessive inflammatory reaction of the body to the pathogen. However, it is not entirely certain.
3. How old were the victims?
The average age of coronavirus victims is75.6 years , but it is already known that not only the elderly are dying. Among the victims are also young people:30-year-olds , as well as children. It turns out that the youngest victim to die from COVID-19 is only16-day-old baby ,4-month-old babyalso died a few weeks earlier . In turn, the oldest victim was 107 years old.
