I'm 32 weeks pregnant. My little sister has shingles. I have heard that you can get sick with it even when you have had chickenpox. Should I avoid contact with my sister? Is the baby safe?
It is better to avoid contact with people suffering from viral infections. A person who has contracted smallpox and has a weakened immune system for some reason may develop shingles. The fetus itself is not able to defend itself against infection, it may suffer damage as a result of the mother's disease.
