I am the mother of 9-year-old Nikola, who soaks at night almost every day. I think it is related to the school, but when I ask the teacher if she is alright she says yes. Nikola herself has a lot of friends and I think that there are no problems with peers at school. What can such bedwetting be caused by? Should I see a doctor?
Bedwetting has many causes - it can be psychogenic causes related to the child's problems, or it can be a symptom of bladder and urethral dysfunction, or disturbances in the secretion of antidiuretic hormone during the night, but also bad habits. These problems will be solved by a doctor dealing with these issues after conducting basic tests, such as: ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder, urine tests and determination of the urine weight in 3 consecutive tests, and filling out a questionnaire called a micturition diary. A basic urodynamic test such as tubular flow can also be performed. After analyzing the information provided by these studies, effective treatment can be initiated.
