- Cytology - what is it?
- The higher the sensitivity of the test, the greater the chances of detecting RSM
Cervical cancer (Uterine Cancer) kills 5 Polish women every day. The number of deaths caused by this cancer in our country is almost 70% higher than in other European Union countries. However, these alarming statistics can be changed. As? Regular cytology plays a key role in the prevention of cystic rhinitis. Recently, a new research technology with a much higher sensitivity is available - liqiud based cytology - LBC.
Currently, thanks to early diagnosis, many neoplastic diseases can be completely cured. One of them is cervical cancer caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Additionally, the cytology that allows for its detection is completely painless and requires no special preparations.
Cytology - what is it?
Cytology is the basic test to detect cellular changes that lead to the development of cervical cancer. It consists in collecting material from the disc and cervical canal, making a microscopic preparation and then its evaluation.
Recently, apart from the conventional method, there is also a modern cytology on a liquid medium, in which cells from the cervix are collected on a special liquid medium. The person collecting the material from the patient does not place it on a microscope slide, but in a container with a liquid that protects the cells from damage. In the laboratory, during centrifugation, the material is deprived of most inflammatory cells, blood, mucus and bacteria, i.e. all elements that could affect incorrect evaluation.
The higher the sensitivity of the test, the greater the chances of detecting RSM
Liquid cytology shows a higher sensitivity, which means it is possible to detect neoplastic changes in a much larger number of women, even at an early stage. Thanks to the LBC method, the diagnostician and pathologist receive a greater number of epithelial cells in the sample. Some preparations made in a conventional manner are not suitable for evaluation due to the insufficient content of these cells. It should be remembered that when performing conventional smears, only a few percent of the material collected from the patient goes to the slide and the rest is thrown into the bin. In the case of the LBC method, 100% of the collected material goes tolaboratory, which greatly increases the likelihood of detecting cell changes. The LBC method, on the other hand, also eliminates the risk that some of the material is outside the viewed area of the preparation. There is also no risk of damaging the sample as a result of its inadequate fixation.
The LBC technology also has another advantage - the material once collected can be subjected to additional tests, such as a test for the presence of human papillomaviruses (HPV DNA), whose persistent infection causes carcinogenic changes. By performing these tests, which can be ordered without leaving your home, you can more accurately determine your risk of developing cancer. Having this knowledge, the doctor can inform the patient about it at the next visit and start possible treatment sooner. Early detection of RSM means a better chance of a cure.
