Plogging - what is plogging?

Plogging is, in other words, eco-running, which is about jogging and collecting garbage during this activity that you encounter or notice while running. Nowadays it is not difficult, but that's what ploggers are for, who at the same time pursue their passion and help mother nature.

Plogging - how did plogging come about?

The term "plogging" was invented by the Swedes who combined the Swedish phrase "plocka upp" meaning - to raise, with a word derived from English. "Jogging", i.e. running.

Although plogging originated in Sweden and so far has only developed in Scandinavia, it is now becoming more and more popular and reaches all over the world. Ploggers are coming, among others, in Paris, Moscow, New York, Sydney, Berlin, and also in Poland - where running with a garbage bag is gaining more and more followers.

In 2022, there was even a "Spring Eco Run in Warsaw". Our country also organizes the event "Parkrun Leather", during which participants collect garbage from inparks.

Plogging can be found wherever there is garbage, because this unique discipline is based on collecting it. In the 21st century, waste is not difficult to find, so ploggers can be found everywhere! Ecological running is not only jogging practiced in forests and parks, but also in cities, where there is a lot of rubbish spilling out of baskets and rubbish lying on the streets.

Plogging - eco philosophy in running

The genesis of plogging comes from the frustration of runners, who often felt overwhelmed by the amount of rubbish falling under their feet. No matter where you jog - garbage has been and is being scattered everywhere! Once again, the good old saying "need is the mother of invention" comes true and it was precisely out of the need to help the polluted world that plogging came about.

It started with single incidents of people sensitive to harm to nature, i.e. throwing rubbish found on walks into the bin, and ended with a fashion that is becoming more and more popular.

All thanks to social media, where ploggers post photos with the hashtag plogging. As you know, the Internet is an unlimited source of communication, so it is not surprising that eco-running has also reached the USA and Australia from Scandinavia.

Social media also create more and more events encouraging runners to participate in organized plogging around the city, beach, forest or park, and you know - strength in the group!

The philosophy of plogging is to work for the benefit of the world, but anyone who has tried eco running at least once knows that this type of work is an extraordinary pleasure and satisfaction. It is combining being fit and being eco in one, and these two things not only take care of ourselves, but also nature, which is so important to every human being.

Plogging - running technique

You might think plogging is standard jogging, only with a net of rubbish in your hand, but you couldn't be further from the truth! Of course, the basic effort in plogging is running and the running technique should be appropriate for this sport, but imagine that every few meters we encounter rubbish on our way. Then what?

And this is where the additional physical effort and energy expenditure that awaits us begins. During ecological running, we encounter a lot of rubbish on our way, so when we see some waste, we must of course stop and pick it up.

For this we use well-known exercises, that is squats and torso! Sometimes we also have to deviate from the route and go to a forest overgrown path to collect garbage or climb up the hill for some rubbish. Suddenlythe change of the route is certainly an additional variety for us, and a different kind of physical effort.

Plogging does not have to mean that we run out of the forest with two heavy sacks of rubbish, under which our arms bend to the ground! A small net or a backpack is enough to collect at least a few waste and derive satisfaction from a good deed, which is undoubtedly cleaning our planet.

Plogging - the benefits of eco running

The first and foremost advantage of plogging is of course the direct environmental impact, but what if you were to look at plogging in terms of the physical effects of the sport? Here's what else you can gain by choosing eco running:

  • to diversify your training
  • more motivation: you run not only for yourself
  • additional muscle work: squats, squats, tilts
  • varied, interval pace
  • extra weight - the more garbage you collect, the harder your muscles will work.
