Masks with a HEPA filter (High Efficiency Particulate Air, i.e. a filter with high efficiency in absorbing solid particles from the air) filter e.g. suspended dust PM2.5 and PM10, pollen, dust, fine hair and pathogenic particles. Thanks to this, they protect the respiratory tract against smog and minimize the risk of droplet infection. Who should wear HEPA masks? What is their effectiveness?

HEPA filter masksstop at least 99.97% of mechanical impurities. All thanks to the filters used, including masks.HEPAare filters that purify the air from all impurities. They are made of sintered glass and their pores are only 0.3 µm. HEPA filters also block bacteria and viruses as well as fungi and protozoa.

Types of filters

Filters used in anti-smog masks are divided into:

  • N99 / N95 filter- the N99 filter is 99% effective in removing PM2.5 and PM10 dust, bacteria and viruses. The N95 filter is characterized by an efficiency of approx. 95%. It is usually made of polypropylene fibers,
  • carbon filter- is able to catch volatile air pollutants such as formaldehyde.

Carbon is pressed into the N99 / N95 filter fibers or in the form of a separate "insert", before or after the mechanical impurities filter.

Mask with HEPA filter - how does it work?

The filtering masks include anti-smog masks. They are mainly worn to minimize contact with contaminated air and prevent harmful dust from entering our respiratory tract.

The principle of their operation is based on the use of an active carbon filter, thanks to which the pollutants in the air we breathe are retained before they reach the lungs.

The mask only fulfilled its purpose if we follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding regular filter replacement.

The mask operates as follows:valves only work on exhalation. Valves are closed when inhaling air, creating resistance.

The inhaled air does not pass through the valves, but through the filter surface (filter fleece). Valves help withexhaust air containing a high concentration of CO2.

If there were no valves, it would be impossible to exhale - because the mask creates a lot of resistance. This mechanism of action makes it difficult for people with respiratory system problems to breathe freely in such a mask.

Mask with HEPA filter - filter replacement

The frequency of filter replacement depends on how polluted the air is in the place where the mask is used.

The recommendation to replace the filter applies only to reusable anti-smog masks . For the disposable ones, the filters cannot be reused and should be thrown away.

Mask with HEPA filter - price

The price of anti-smog masks is within the rangefrom 30 to 400 PLN .

How to choose the best mask?

When choosing an anti-smog mask, it is worth paying attention to its construction. Most of these masks have one or two valves to help you breathe.

First of all, the number of valves, their width and location will affect the comfort of breathing. Then we are sure that the anti-smog mask is doing its job.

Who can wear HEPA masks?

For people in good physical condition and not suffering from he alth problems, anti-smog masks can be recommended for cycling or jogging in periods of high air pollution.

It is not recommended to wear anti-smog masks for a long time, because staying in a mask for several hours may be dangerous to our he alth. Breathing in such a mask is difficult, so this way we can lead to hypoxia in the body.

The use of these masks is reasonable and safe if the concentration of pollutants in the air is very high and we need to go outside for a short time.
