Andrzejki is a great opportunity to just have fun before the next magical period - Christmas. Although today St. Andrew's Day celebrations in most cases in a secular way - playing at home, and not remembering St. Andrew at a mass in the church - his patron himself is Christian.

Andrzejki: when are they?

Andrzejki always fall on the same day - we celebrate them on the night of November 29-30. Not so long ago, St. Andrew's Day was the last opportunity to have fun before Advent - because Advent, like fasting, was a period of silent waiting for the birth (in the case of fasting for the resurrection) of Christ.

The genesis of this holiday and the history of St. Andrew, whom he patronizes, is not happy. St. Andrew came from Bethsaida in Galilee, he died a martyr on November 30 - it is not known exactly in what year, between 60 and 72. St. Andrew was an apostle, brother of St. Peter, for preaching the teachings of Christ, he was murdered by hanging on the cross. The cross had the shape X (this is the first letter of the name Christ in Greek) and today such crosses are called the crosses of St. Andrew.

So how did it happen that St. Will Andrzej become, whether he wants it or not, and the patron of selfless games of fortune-telling? Well, he also patronizes the maidens at the rendition, and allegedly connected with fortune-telling in Greece. In Poland, St. Andrew's Day has been celebrated since the 16th century, when virgins tried various divinations to find out who was written for them. Interestingly, the bachelors had their own holiday - it is celebrated on the night of November 24-25 - the memory of St. Catherine of Alexandria. Youths that day also fortune to themselves, today Catherine is not celebrated, St. Andrew's Day is a common fun for boys and girls, women and adults who do not take them (hopefully) seriously.

Andrzejki: the most popular omens

An inseparable element of andrzejek are fortune-telling.Below we present the most popular of them.

1. Pouring wax

Definitely the most popular fortune telling on St. Andrew's Day. It is enough to find a large, old key and a candle, from which we place the melted wax in a small bowl. Pour the wax through the wrench's lug into the next, larger bowl with water. The shape that will appear will be our fortune-telling - sometimes you have to be careful to read anything from this wax stain.

2. Shoes

This fortune-telling is popular especially in schools because it concerns virgins. The idea is to place the shoes (specifically the shoe on the left leg) one behind the other in front of the door, and then move them one by one, until one of them crosses the threshold. The person who turns out to be its owner can count on a quick marriage.

3. Heart

A simple St. Andrew's Day party for teenagers or adult singles - just cut out a large heart from a sheet of paper, leave it blank on the one hand, and write out a whole series of male or female names on the other. One person holds the heart facing him on the side of the names, the other takes a pin and sticks it in on the blank side. The name the pin hit will be used by the future chosen one or the chosen one of the person taking part in the fortune telling.

4. Apples

We peel the apple so that the skin is as long as possible. When we are done, we throw it over our shoulder on the floor / table and check what letter came out of it. This will be the first letter of the future husband / wife's name.

5. Cups

A fortune for St. Andrew, which is very similar to those that are often repeated on the child's first birthday. Depending on your fantasy, you can put many symbols under the cups, e.g. a wedding ring, candy, coin, key. What a person chooses will show their future. The wedding ring is, of course, an imminent wedding, a coin - we alth, a key - a move, and a candy - the birth of a child.

This is a typical fortune telling for children. To prepare it, you need to have straws and have them cut into three equal parts. Then write the names of the children on them with a marker and put them all in a large bowl of water. Straw owners who connect will become friends for life.

7. Fortune telling with flowers

You just need to equip yourself with several types of flowers or print their images from the Internet. A person to indicate his flower as a favorite (you can also come up withthe randomized version with the pages facing down) will receive information about what exactly it means. Many flowers have meaning ascribed to them, e.g. dahlia - success, rose - beauty, narcissus - self-love, etc.

8. Matches

St. Andrew's Day fun definitely for adults - you should light two matches next to each other. If the flames stick to each other and start to burn towards each other - it means a dream come true within the next year, otherwise - it means that you will have to wait for its realization.

9. Fortune telling under the pillow

This is a fortune-telling to do on your own. It is enough to write male or female names on strips of paper, hide the cards under the pillow, and after waking up, take out one of the sheets - this way we will know the name of the future husband or wife.

10. Fortune cookies

A rather demanding fortune, especially for people who don't like spending time in the kitchen. You should write names on strips of paper or simply fortune-telling for the future, use them as a filling for baked cookies, and at a party in St. Andrew's Day, try some sweets and check what fortune you came across.
