According to the latest research conducted on adults infected with COVID-19 in 2022, more than a quarter of them did not fully recover after 6, and in some cases even 8 months after they became ill. These discoveries were described by researchers at the University of Zurich in Switzerland.
There is growing evidence that COVID-19 infection may result inlong-term physical and mental he alth consequences, now referred to as the "post COVID-19 syndrome" or "long COVID" ( "Long COVID").Long-term symptoms are of increasing concern in he althcare systems.
The study was conducted on 431 participants in Switzerland with confirmed presence of SARS-CoV-2 between February and August 2022.
Among the people participating in the survey:
- 26% of participants reported that they had not fully recovered within six to eight months of initial COVID-19 diagnosis,
- 55% reported fatigue,
- 25% had some degree of breathlessness
- 26% had symptoms of depression.
40% of participants reported at least one COVID-19 related GP visit after an acute illness. The study's authors say their findings highlight the need for timely planning of patient resources and services for post-COVID-19 care.
