For 15 years I have been drinking senna (1-2 bags) almost every day in the evening. Without it, there is no way to defecate. I have a flatulence problem. Should I see a doctor? I once talked about senna, but the doctor said it was a harmless herb and you could drink it. How do I stop using it? It is also a mental problem because I'm afraid to get fat. In addition, once every few days I feel a prickling sensation in my abdomen, in the upper left part or around the navel. After a few hours, it passes. It appears after eating.
It is advisable that you try to discontinue senna, as its chronic use causes "laziness" of the natural intestinal peristalsis. I do not share the view that it is a "harmless herb" - all herbs used for a long time have some undesirable effects and, contrary to sometimes encountered views, they are not weakly acting substances. The method of stimulating the peristalsis of the gastrointestinal tract by consuming laxatives is not recommendable. Please try a diet high in fiber (vegetables, fruits). Its effect can be enhanced by the addition of yogurt with 2-3 tablespoons of bran and prunes. Abdominal pain is likely related to intestinal spasms, which are fed a diet that is too low in fiber. With better filling of the intestines with dietary content from a diet rich in fiber, the problems should disappear. Occasionally, persistent constipation may require a more detailed examination of the large intestine (endoscopy) to rule out other diseases of an organic nature that may be the cause of constipation.
