Could elevated ESR be a result of taking hormonal birth control pills?

Hello, the OB norm for women is 6 to 11 mm after 1 hour, 6 to 20 mm after 2 hours (for men 3 - 8 mm after 1 hour, 5 - 18 mm after 23 hours). It is a non-specific index and can be increased in a wide variety of disease states. The most common situations in which ESR increases are various types of inflammation - not always the cause of ailments noticed by the patient. For example, tooth inflammation is a common cause of increased ESR. In such situations, there is a moderate increase in ESR. If ESR is significantly elevated, it is usually due to a medical condition involving changes in blood protein composition. I am not aware of the effect of contraceptive pills (as such) on the ESR, unless there are complications in the course of their use, e.g. phlebitis (especially women who smoke cigarettes are at risk of this complication) - then there may be a relationship between the use of pills and OB height.
