I have a diagnosed colorectal cancer, I have a stoma. I'm after radio- and chemotherapy. After the tumor was removed, urinary incontinence problems developed. Ultrasound examination revealed moderate bilateral hydronephrosis. Should I see a urologist or a nephrologist with this problem? Can it be cured with antibiotics or is surgery required?
The presence of hydronephrosis and urinary incontinence are two independent problems. From the treatment performed, I conclude that you had the final segment of your colon removed. As a result of this procedure, the innervation of the urinary bladder and the muscles of the urogenital diaphragm could be damaged, which in turn could cause problems with urinary incontinence. Immediately, hydronephrosis developed as a result of obstruction of the flow of urine from the kidneys into the bladder. The condition can be caused by changes following treatment, e.g., radiotherapy and pressure on the ureters, or by underlying disease. A consultation with your oncologist and urologist would be advisable. Long-lasting hydronephrosis can lead to kidney damage and failure.
