Does the parent have to pay for the hospital stay if he / she is there because of a sick child?
YES. The amount of such stay is always determined by the hospital unit individually. The patient has the right to additional nursing care. Additional nursing care is understood as care that does not consist in providing he alth services, including care provided to a patient during pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium. The patient bears the costs of exercising the rights, if the implementation of these rights results in costs incurred by the he althcare entity performing medical activities such as stationary and round-the-clock he alth services within the meaning of the provisions on medical activity. The amount of the cost compensation fee is determined by the entity's manager, taking into account the actual costs of exercising the rights. Information on the amount of the fee and the method of its determination is public and made available at the entity's business premises. Under the insurance, the National He alth Fund covers only the costs of he alth services provided to the patient. The exception is the reimbursement of the mother's stay (in the maternity and newborn ward) as part of the "extended hospitalization of the breastfeeding mother due to the child's he alth - from the 5th day after the birth". The cost of such a stay is PLN 102 per night. Despite the fact that in hospital children's wards there are also breastfeeding mothers, no similar reimbursement has been introduced. There is no list of services that could be considered medically necessary. It is impossible to establish such a list, because any service may be considered as a service necessary from the medical point of view, if the doctor determines that for he alth reasons and due to the expected duration of the patient's stay, it is necessary to provide him with a specific type of he alth benefits in kind, including parental care. Legal basis: Ordinance of the Minister of He alth amending the ordinance on guaranteed benefits in the field of he alth programs of January 11, 2010 No. 5, item 29, as amended) The Act of November 6, 2008 on the rights of patients and the Patient's Rights Ombudsman (Journal of Laws of 2012, item 159)
