Greta Garbo came to Hollywood in the 1920s at the invitation of Louis Mayer - one of the founders of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, then the largest film company in Hollywood. He noted that "in America, men don't like fat women." Garbo remembered his words and since arriving at the Dream Factory, she had been on a diet consisting mainly of cooked vegetables ( although some sources say it was only spinach), which made her exhausted, suffering from insomnia and severe anemia.

Then she met Gayelord Hauser - a self-proclaimed American nutrition specialist (he had no education in this field), who was a dietary advisor to many stars (including Marlene Dietrich, Grace Kelly and Wallis Simpson - Duchess of Windsor).

The basis of his nutritional program were vegetables, fruit juices and protein-rich he althy food. Hauser did not exclude vegetables from Greta Garbo's diet, but suggested that they should be "fortified" with protein - pieces of ham, chicken, cottage cheese or wheat germ. Reportedly, his first meal prepared for the Swedish actress was a vege burger, consisting of wild rice and chopped hazelnuts, mixed with an egg and fried in soybean oil. In turn, for dessert, he prepared a toasted grapefruit, in the middle of which was the final sugar cane molasses - considered by Hauser to be one of the five "miraculous" productsnutritional (these also included yoghurt, brewer's yeast, powdered skim milk and wheat germ). One of Greta Garbo's favorite meals was a cup of broth with chives and cottage cheese, half of a ripe avocado with the addition of herbs, vinegar and oil-based dressing, a slice of pineapple and a piece of toasted, buttered dark bread. However, after some time, Greta Garbo's menu only included: chicken, dried apricots and whole milk, as well as brown beans and biscuits for a snack. Later, Garbo went almost to a hunger strike. Apparently, during the filming of "Ninoczka" (late 1930s), the actress was on a strict diet consisting only of raw carrots and cabbage.

Another person who influenced the diet of Greta Garbo was Dr. Harold Bieler, a dietitian from Pasadena (USA). Apparently, the Garbo menu for a time only included "Bieler broth", which consisted of zucchini purée, onions, various types of pumpkins and potatoes.

One of the reasons Greta Garbo was constantly struggling with excess weight could be due to the caloric alcohol. The actress claimed that she drank alcohol every day, but only in certain amounts. One of her favorite drinks was the traditional Swedish liqueur (Punsch).
