Hello! My boyfriend is 24 years old, although we have known each other for several years, we have not discussed the problem of his speech impediment so far. I know that when I ask, he may get offended and he avoids the subject himself. The problem is that when he speaks, I have the impression that something is disturbing his mouth, he is not pronouncing "r" more "l". Additionally, when he wants to say something quickly or gets stressed out, he misses words and is hard to understand, but generally speaking slowly. I know that he went to an ENT specialist, but unfortunately I don't know the details. This worries me, because in the company of embarrassment, I do not know what is wrong with him, how to help him and how to encourage him to treatment so as not to offend him. I am asking for advice on what it can be and what to do with it.
Please try to talk to your boyfriend and offer him an appointment with a speech therapist. You can visit with him. The speech therapist will conduct a thorough diagnosis and suggest exercises to be performed at home. The r-correction is one aspect, stress-related problems with clarity - the other. Maybe an additional consultation with a psychologist will be needed. But this should be decided by a speech therapist.
