Hello, I have a problem with my driving license. The hospital sent a message to the communications department: "condition after the first epileptic seizure". However, it now turns out that there are significant errors in the hospital records and this may indicate another cause of seizures that occurred once. The case is as follows: for the first time in my life, I was donating platelets at the blood donation center (previously I donated blood and everything was fine). I experienced tingling in my arms, legs etc., fainting and twitching. The ladies nurses gave me intravenous calcium and everything subsided, but they called an ambulance. After all that, I was taken to the Emergency Room and underwent other tests. The electrocardiogram was normal, the chest X-ray was fine, the head CT was fine as well. However, I stayed under observation in the hospital (6 days), I felt great, nothing happened. I didn't get any medications, blood tests (magnesium a little lower) and urine tests were good. However, the time has come for the EEG examination, the result: Paroxysmal pathological changes against the background of a slight degree of generalized changes. Of course, it was immediately recognized that I had my first epileptic seizure. Nobody wanted to listen under what circumstances the chills appeared. I would also like to add that the EEG test was done in strange conditions (everything broke). I also know that this is an auxiliary test and should not be a decisive factor. However, after leaving the hospital, I noticed an error in the documentation: it is stated everywhere that I donated blood, not platelets, which as it turned out is very important in this case, as it indicates another cause of seizures - the side effects of citrate. I consulted another doctor and her opinion is: "blood" is returned "is mixed with a preservative. Citrate binds calcium, which can cause a sudden, sharp drop in ionized calcium in the blood serum. Symptoms are: numbness, tingling - of the tongue, chin , arms and legs, transient arrhythmias and neurological disorders ". Similarly, the neurologist I went to said, in his opinion, I do not require any treatment. What to do in this situation? The communications department is all right, and I feel wronged. The second important point concerns a medical secret that has been broken in some way. Thank you in advance for the answer. Regards

There are several options to resolve the situation. First, you can try to diagnose your he alth condition again and inthis way to confirm or eliminate the suspicion of epilepsy. The second option is finding the truth about the disease and possible compensation in court resulting from a diagnostic error. You can also appeal to the patient ombudsman. Another option is to notify the district professional liability ombudsman. Pursuant to Art. 31 of the Act on Medical Chambers, the commissioner for liability performs checking activities and conducts explanatory proceedings in matters of professional liability of doctors who are members of the chamber of which he is an advocate. Moreover, the district professional liability ombudsman performs the function of the prosecutor before medical courts. I would like to inform you that epilepsy is a disease of various etiologies, characterized by the occurrence of epileptic seizures, which are an expression of brain dysfunction. Epilepsy is diagnosed when two or more seizures occur over a 5-year period, more than 24 hours apart. For the purposes of adjudication, the diagnosis of epilepsy is made by a neurologist. If the applicant develops a loss of consciousness, a disturbance of consciousness or a seizure disorder with epileptic symptomatology, it is necessary to evaluate the condition, taking into account the risk of recurrence while driving.

Legal basis: Regulation of the Minister of He alth on medical examinations of drivers and applicants for driving licenses (Journal of Laws of 2013, item 133, as amended)
