Ovulation monitoring is one of the basic tests that should be performed by a woman unsuccessfully trying to conceive. By monitoring ovulation, you can find out when an egg is being released and therefore when your chances of becoming pregnant are best. Find out what ovulation monitoring is all about.

Ovulation monitoringalso known asovulation monitoringis one of the basic tests that are performed in infertility diagnosis.

Its purpose is to determine whether the Graafian follicle develops normally and when ovulation begins, i.e. when the follicle ruptures (or does not occur at all) and a mature egg is released from it. The test also allows you to determine the most likely date of ovulation, which makes it easier to conceive a child.

Ovulation monitoring - indications for the test

Ovulation monitoring is a test that is intended for all women who have had unprotected intercourse for at least one year and cannot become pregnant. It is also recommended for women during ovulation stimulation.

Ovulation monitoring - what is it?

Ovulation monitoring involves performing several tests with the ultrasound vaginal transducer ( vaginal ultrasound ) at certain intervals. A woman should report for the first examination at the beginning of the cycle (between the fifth and eighth day after the first day of menstruation). The doctor then assesses the number of follicles in the ovary. During subsequent visits, the doctor will observe:

  • growth of the Graaf follicle and possibly any abnormalities such as a sudden reduction in its size, collapse of its walls and the appearance of follicular fluid around the ovulating ovary and in Douglas Bay (the lowest point in the abdominal cavity);
  • transformation of the mucosa covering the inside of the uterus, i.e. the endomerium;
  • changes taking place in the cervical canal in the form of accumulation of cervical mucus in it during theperovulatory;

These observations will continue until the follicle ruptures and the egg is released. On this basis, it assesses whether the fertile days have started. As an alternative, blood tests are also performed to determine the level of hormones.

Ovulation monitoring usually consists of 3-4 tests that are performed throughout the cycle. However, in women whose cycles are irregular, this number can go up to 8-10.

Ovulation monitoring - test results

If the follicles do not reach the correct size during the examination, the doctor may decide to administer medications to support their development. If the follicles develop properly but do not rupture, the doctor should look for the cause of the condition.Lack of ovulationmay be caused by, among other things,

  • polycystic ovary syndrome
  • diseases of the pituitary and hypothalamus
  • obesity
  • seriously underweight
  • excess prolactin and other hormonal disorders

The doctor may also decide on pharmacological support that will cause the follicle rupture. Then the test allows to determine when exactly this type of drug can be administered.
