Trichomoniasis(trichomondosis) is a sexually transmitted (venereal) disease caused by trichomonas vaginalis. It is a parasite of the lower parts of the human urogenital organs. In women, it is most often found in the vagina, also in the cervix and urethra, and in men - on the foreskin and glans, in the urethra and in the prostate gland. The infection rate for women is 20%, for men - 10%.

Trichomoniasis - how can you get infected?

The infection occurs via:

  • genitourinary system, especially directly during intercourse,
  • in labor,

Infections that are indirect, such as through gynecological instruments, bath items, bedding, etc., are generally assigned a minor role.

Trichomoniasis - symptoms in women

The symptoms of trichomoniasis in women are:

In approximately 10-50 percent of patients, trichomoniasis is asymptomatic.

  • heavy, gray, yellow-green, frothy, unpleasant odor
  • burning and itching of the vagina and vulva
  • pain during intercourse
  • contact spotting
  • redness of the vulva, vagina and cervix

In the event of urinary tract infections, the following also appear:

  • pains in the coil
  • pollakiuria
  • pains in the lower abdomen

In women, untreated trichomoniasis, due to the colonization of the uterus and even the fallopian tubes, may cause infertility or pregnancy complications.

Trichomoniasis - symptoms in men

In men who are carriers of the protozoan, trichomoniasis is often asymptomatic. Other men develop symptoms of inflammation of the foreskin, glans, urethra andbladder, accompanied by:

  • whitish urethral discharge
  • itching and burning pain in the urethra
  • pollakiuria.

Trichomoniasis - diagnosis

To diagnose trichomoniasis, you should visit a gynecologist, urologist or dermatologist-venereologist. The confirmation of the initial diagnosis of the disease is a laboratory test of a vaginal discharge sample from a woman, and from a man's urethra. In the case of trichomoniasis, both partners should also be treated.

Trichomoniasis - treatment

The treatment of trichomoniasis uses an antibiotic, metronidazole - a drug with bactericidal and protozoicidal properties. The drug is prescribed by a doctor, it is used orally or vaginally, 2 times a day. For prophylactic purposes, it is recommended to use condoms during sexual intercourse.

  • Create a mutually monogamous relationship with your partner.
  • If you do not have a regular partner - remember to protect them with a condom.
  • Give up sexual intercourse with a sick person or during treatment.
  • In public toilets, do not sit on the toilet seat.

  • Never borrow bathing suits or underwear (not from anyone else).
