There is really no clear definition and pharmacologists themselves have difficulties with unequivocally stated what legal highs are. Some consider them to be a type of drug that only differs from the "real" drugs that, until recently, were sold legally.
Others refer to them aspsychoactive substances , and others (sellers) refer to them as "collectibles".

They can be of natural origin, including herbal preparations containing mainly hallucinogenic compounds, e.g. those based on extracts of toadstool or spotted sage, bard sage, Hawaiian morning glory, kratoma (leaves of the Mitragyna Speciosa tree). They are available as dried or extract.
Most often, one afterburner contains compounds not from one, but several, or even a dozen or so plants! And since each of them can (and usually has) several psychoactive substances, alkaloids, it is not difficult to imagine how such an afterburner works.
After consuming such an electrifying mixture, there is sensory hypersensitivity, changeable moods characterized by a sudden transition from euphoria to depression, hallucinations.

The degree of their harmfulness varies, of course, and depends on many factors - the type of the legal high, the amount of toxic substances it contains, the age, weight and he alth of the user, the circumstances that accompany the use of the legal high.
They are often consumed together with alcohol, medications or other drugs, greatly increasing the risk of serious interactions and poisoning the body.
The least serious symptoms of drug poisoning include headaches, chest pains, arrhythmias, insomnia, problems with concentration, anxiety.
For more serious, life-threatening: heart attack, stroke, states of aggression that may end with an attempted suicide or murder, coma, kidney and liver failure.
Legal highs are especially dangerous for people who suffer from chronic diseases - e.g. allergy sufferers, diabetics, for people with a weakened immune system and for all those who are still in the developmental period, i.e. for children and adolescents.
Symptoms that may indicate the use of legal highs include: excessive sweating, nystagmus, trismus, nausea, vomiting, auditory and visual hallucinations, anxiety, sudden increase in blood pressure, bursting headache, atrial fibrillation.
If you've ever used a legal high and feel unwell, remember to:
- drink a lot of mineral water
- keep the afterburner packaging with you to show the doctor, which will make it easier for him to start a rescue operation
- do not get behind the wheel
- do not take any medications that may interact with the substances contained in the afterburner

The most dangerous are those that contain deadly alkaloids, the same as those in deadly toadstools. Whoever buys such preparations signs a death warrant for himself.
