I am a woman of 28 years old. I have a very elevated ESR (42). Could this be due to gingivitis and the fact that I was testing during my period?

Hello, the interpretation of the test result and possible comments on the probable cause can only be provided by the doctor who examined you in the office and has the result of the test, as well as other tests. ESR - it is worth mentioning here that it is a test developed and first used in diagnostics by Dr. Edmund Biernacki in 1897 and later called "Biernecki's test", for short ESR - is normally a constant value that depends on several parameters such as weight red blood cells, plasma volume, blood protein levels, and several other factors. ESR differs in individual age groups, and so: for newborns the norm is up to 2 mm / h, for infants up to 12 -17 mm / h, for women up to 60 years of age up to 12 mm / h, for women over 60 years of age. up to 20 mm / hour, for men up to 60 years of age up to 8 mm / hour, for men over 60 years of age up to 15 mm / hour ESR can accelerate both under physiological conditions (due to different body functions) and pathological conditions. The physiological conditions in which ESR accelerates include pregnancy and puerperium, menstruation and the use of oral hormonal contraception. Increased ESR in pathological conditions - the most common cause are all kinds of inflammation, but also many diseases in which there are changes in blood composition, in kidney diseases and in many other disease states. In your case, both of the above-mentioned situations (menstruation, gingivitis) may have an influence on the increase of the result, but only your doctor can express an opinion to what extent the result can be associated with the above-mentioned circumstances. Generally, it is worth not to perform scheduled tests during the menstruation.
