The low-purine diet is a therapeutic diet intended primarily for people struggling with gout (arthritis). A low purine diet can also help prevent the build-up of kidney stones. What is a low purine diet? What can you eat? What products are banned?

Low purine dietishealing dietwhich consists in restricting the consumption of foods high in purines (these are usually foods high in purine proteins). The aim of the diet is to reduce the content of uric acid in the body (the final product of the transformation of purine compounds), so that it does not accumulate in tissues and organs, leading to their dysfunction. Currently, some specialists believe that if the disease is not in the acute phase, you can eat foods from all groups, using only quantitative restrictions, and only in the case of an attack of the disease, strictly follow the recommendations of a low-purine diet.

Low purine diet - who is it for?

Low purine diet is intended primarily for people struggling withgout . When there is too much purine in a patient's diet, excess uric acid is formed. The kidneys are not able to excrete it, and its excess goes to, among others to the joints. Hence a simple path to inflammation, characteristic of this disease.

Reducing purines in the diet is also recommended for people suffering fromkidney stones , specifically due to the build-up of uric acid stones. This condition is very often caused by a diet rich in purines.

Low purine diet - rules

1. A low purine diet should be low in fat and higher in carbohydrates to promote urate elimination.

2. Meals should be cooked in plenty of water or steamed (cooking reduces the amount of purines), baked in foil or stewed without browning.

3. Meals (preferably 4-5 a day) should be eaten regularly, and the last one should be eaten 3-4 hours before going to bed (the amount of uric acid retained in the body increases at night).

4. It is important to take min. 2 liters of fluid daily. Their proper amount will prevent uric acid from precipitating in the kidneys and kidney stones. You should take care of replenishing fluidsespecially before going to bed (the highest concentration of uric acid is found in the urine in the morning).
