I am the mother of a 17-year-old who underwent surgery to remove the thyroid gland on both sides and iodine treatment. He is taking the prescribed medications and is currently slightly underactive. Before the surgery, my hormones were normal. I am asking for advice on diet for her - I am starting to worry, she is pale, lacking in concentration and her hair is falling out. I've heard about a protein diet - will it be good for it?

It is definitely worth reporting your observations to your attending physician. Perhaps something should be changed in pharmacotherapy. As for the diet, I would not follow a protein diet, but I would increase the amount of protein in my daily diet a little. In addition, the amount of iron, zinc and other ingredients in the menu is very important. For a few days it would be worth writing down what exactly and in what amounts the daughter eats and checking whether there are also nutritional deficiencies. It is necessary to adjust the energy of the daughter's diet to her activity - both school and physical. I would also pay attention to whether the products in my daughter's diet are wholesome. The menu should be based on whole grain cereal products, with plenty of vegetables, and with a high reduction in sugar and sweet products (e.g. sweet breakfast cereals, sweet yoghurts and milk desserts).
