I had mononucleosis as a child. Can a virus that is inside it for life pass onto a fetus?
Epstein-Barr virus, the virus that causes mononucleosis, can remain in a latent form in the body after it becomes infected, and the developing child may become infected intrauterineally, but the risk of infection is low, and the risk of adversely affecting the child's development is even smaller . For these reasons, it is believed that previous mononucleosis has no effect on the development of the fetus.
