I have a suspicion of PCOS, but not yet confirmed. If I take birth control pills (regularly as needed), go for an ultrasound and it shows me that I still have follicles (many) in my ovaries, is contraceptive effectiveness maintained? Do the tablets work? I am convinced that the ovaries should be "clean" with the tablets, because they are said to be "dormant" while taking the tablets. What does it look like?
Hormones contained in contraceptive pills inhibit ovulation, they inhibit only the last stage of maturation of follicles in the ovary. The bubbles grow to about 10 mm, then not. Hence, the ultrasound image of the ovaries during the use of hormonal contraception is similar to that in PCOS.
