When his peers were playing with blocks, Dr. Wojciech Rybak, MD, a surgeon, phlebologist, certified aesthetic medicine doctor, founder and founder of the Ars Estetica Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Therapy Clinic, gave his teddy bears injections of water and poured liquids. Unfortunately, some patients did not survive these medical experiments.

- I grew up in a home where medicine was talked about, because both parents are doctors - saysWojciech Rybak, MD, PhD, surgeon, phlebologist, certified aesthetic medicine doctor, founder and founder of the Clinic Aesthetic Medicine and Laser Therapy Ars Estetica . - When I went to high school, my parents wrote their doctorates, took part in various studies, so I gradually soaked up this atmosphere, maybe also some emotions with which they talked about their work. And so it all started. After passing the tests, Dr. Rybak was admitted to the Medical Academy in Wrocław, a city that is very close to him and to which his grandparents arrived one of the last transports of displaced people from the East.

It started in Polanica

After graduating, he joined the renowned Plastic Surgery Clinic in Polanica-Zdrój as a young doctoral student. Then he worked at the Provincial Specialist Hospital in Wrocław, and he completed his specialization in surgery and completed his doctorate at the Department of Vascular, General and Transplant Surgery at the Medical University Hospital in Wrocław. - Although in college I used to chase girls instead of sitting over books, I achieved my goal and became a surgeon - he says with a smile.

From father to son

Phlebology, or knowledge about diseases of the veins, is not an officially recognized medical speci alty. It may be said to arise out of vascular surgery, but there are surgeons who are phlebologists and phlebologists who are not surgeons. Diseases of the veins are a very serious medical and social problem.

Phlebology, the relatively young science of vein disease, grew out of vascular surgery.

- Phlebology is my great professional passion - says Dr. Rybak. - I started to be interested in it while still a student, because my father (Prof. Zbigniew Rybak, vascular surgeon, angiologist) often operated on sick veins. During one of my trips to the USA, while still a student, I met Dr.Tomas Eaton, a member of the American network of clinics dealing exclusively with treating venous problems. I saw that he was treating varicose veins with sclerotherapy. After my return, I wanted to convince my dad to do this type of treatment. All I heard was: "We are surgeons and we are going to operate." But since my father hides the soul of a seeker, a year and a half later, we started to conduct courses for doctors in sclerotherapy together.

Revolution in phlebology

A great breakthrough in the diagnosis and treatment of venous diseases was the introduction of Doppler ultrasound scanners. There was no longer any need for invasive tests, such as venipuncture, to determine the causes of vein problems. - Doppler ultrasound has become the gold standard in the diagnosis of venous diseases - explains Dr. Rybak. - It allows the veins to be viewed in detail and the blood flow to be visualized. In short, we can see exactly what is happening in the veins, where are their weak points. You can do the so-called venous mapping and on this basis precisely plan the treatment.

It is known that over 50% of the society has some form of venous disease. These are seemingly harmless "spider veins", varicose veins, up to venous ulcers, which can sometimes end with amputation of the leg.

Since the introduction of Doppler ultrasound scanners in phlebology, tremendous progress has been made. Endovascular techniques, i.e. endovascular techniques, with the use of radio waves, laser and recently water vapor have become revolutionary. The use of laser fiber or compressed steam allows the closure of the diseased vein from the inside, without cutting and tearing it, as is the case with classic varicose veins removal procedures. The entire procedure is performed under ultrasound control under local anesthesia, which makes it safe and comfortable for the patient.

- After such a procedure, the patient can go home right away - explains Dr. Rybak. - Once he had to stay in the hospital, sometimes even for a few days. This is a huge benefit for hospitals, but most of all for patients. Besides, nowadays, in order to achieve the best therapeutic results, we can use several methods at the same time and at the same time. This is called hybrid treatment, which allows, after establishing the appropriate treatment process, to get rid of many venous problems and at the same time obtain an excellent aesthetic effect.

A dream come true

- As a child, I dreamed of becoming a pilot - says Wojciech Rybak. - For many years of working full-time I could not make this dream come true. This possibility appeared when I started working "on my own". But it is not easy to obtain a pilot's license, especially for flights in difficult conditions, according to the indications of instruments, without the visibility of the ground. To obtain them, you need to pass practically the same exams that pilots of large liner airplanes pass. The same rules apply in the airspace of all. - Aviation is combined with surgery, because just as you have to plan every flight carefully, you have to plan every operation with the same care. The pilot has to carefully develop the take-off procedure, flight route, fuel quantity, approach to landing, alternative airports, etc. My plane can travel at a speed of almost 400 km / h. During the flight, it is impossible to pull over to the side of the road, unfold the maps and check where I should fly. I need to know, to predict. The same is true of surgery. I cannot begin surgery unless I am prepared for every situation. Aviation is a passion that requires constant training, improvement and skill control. Similar rules apply also to every doctor in his profession (the so-called lifelong learning). In the air I feel free, truly free. I can hear myself, flight control, other planes, cell phone is not working - what more could you ask for? The doctor's other passion is water sports, mainly sailing, but also extreme ones - kitesurfing and surfing. In winter, it's time for skiing and snowboarding.
