Treatment of a sick person can be supported with an appropriate diet. Food prepared for patients who are lying down must be semi-fluid and easy to digest. Dark bread, thick pasta and buckwheat should be eliminated from the diet of a lying person. It is worth having portable tables and appropriate dishes to facilitate the serving of meals to a bedridden person.
In the case of patients in bed, an easily digestible diet is required, in which only strictly defined cereal products are allowed: pale and stale bread (sometimes graham bread in a limited amount), rusks, small groats, rice, small pasta.
Prohibited products
Forbidden in the diet of a bedridden person are:
- wholemeal rye and wheat bread,
- all fresh bread,
- french croissants,
- thick groats: pearl barley, buckwheat,
- thick pasta.
So the choice of cereal products for the patient is best discussed with a doctor or dietitian.

It is important to stay hydrated. Usually, it is recommended to drink about 3 liters of liquids in the form of juices, compotes, soups, still water (we serve low-sodium water). A patient who is lying down should drink 2 glasses of milk or milk products (yoghurt, kefir) a day.
Constipation - a frequent problem of patients lying down
Constipation is a common problem of bedridden people. To improve bowel movements, it is good to drink a glass of warm water with a teaspoon of honey on an empty stomach, and an infusion of linseed at bedtime.
