Ovulation disorders, decreased fertility or weight control problems reduce the quality of life of women suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome. However, the current knowledge about PCOS and the available treatment methods allow patients to function normally and effectively fight the undesirable symptoms.
The special guest of the event was an outstanding expertprof. dr hab. n. med. Beata Banaszewskafrom the Department of Infertility and Reproductive Endocrinology at the Medical University of Poznań - specialist in obstetrics, gynecology, gynecological endocrinology and reproduction, co-author of a study on the effect of probiotics on reducing symptoms in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
During the meeting, it was emphasized that PCOS affects women of all ages (not only women planning pregnancy, but also teenagers and menopausal women). "Bermuda triangle", i.e. the coexistence and negative interaction of three disorders: PCOS, insulin resistance and obesity.
-Breaking this triangle, e.g. by leading to weight loss in the patient, reduces insulin resistance, and thus reduces the production of androgens in the blood serum and increases the production of the protein that these androgens bind - she saidprof. Beata Banaszewska , while emphasizing the role of diet and physical activity in the PCOS treatment process.- In the recommendations of all scientific societies - both Australian, American and European - diet comes first. First, we put the patient on a weight loss, and only then we introduce drugs that stimulate ovulation or other.
The expert also drew attention to the role of the intestinal microbiota in PCOS - a topic that has attracted the attention of scientists in recent years. Studies published in recent years confirm that women suffering from PCOS have a lower composition of intestinal microbiota than he althy ones. This is no coincidence, as as many as 60% of women suffering from PCOS suffer from obesity at the same time. The composition of their intestinal microbiota is dominated by bacteria that have an adverse effect on metabolism.
