Alkaline diet promotes products that deacidify the body. Whether a given product acidifies or deacidifies the body does not depend on its taste, but on how it behaves in the metabolic process. Alkaline products are those which remain alkaline during digestion. Which products are recommended in an alkaline diet?

Alkaline dietrelies onalkalizing products . The goal of an alkaline diet is to restore the acid-base balance in the body, and its main goal is to eat about 80 percent alkaline foods and 20 percent acid foods. Maintaining this state of affairs in the body will ensure its he alth.

So what products have an alkaline-forming effect on the body?First of all, citrus, but also most vegetables and fruits. Beets, lettuce, apples, celery, bananas and melons are especially active in neutralizing acids. The acid-base balance will be preserved in the body if, for example, bread is eaten with lettuce, cress, parsley or tomato, and meat is obligatory with vegetables - cooked and raw. As an alkaline diet is based on maintaining a neutral pH level in the body - it is 7.365 - it should be remembered that stress, lack of exercise, as well as taking medications and too little sleep contribute to lowering this value.

Alkaline diet - products allowed - use the PRAL indicator

The PRAL (Potential Renal Acid Load) indicator expresses the ability of individual food products to burden the kidneys with acids. It is calculated taking into account the content of proteins and minerals in food, their bioavailability, products of sulfur metabolism and organic acids excreted in urine. PRAL is administered in mEq per 100 g of the product. A positive PRAL index indicates the acid-forming effect of a given food, and a negative one - the alkaline-forming effect. So if you want to maintain an appropriate pH of the urine and prevent acidification of the body, compose your meals so that the PRAL is -10-60 mEq / day.

The effects of an alkaline diet

The main goal of an alkaline diet is not to lose weight ( although over time the person on it loses unnecessary kilograms), but to maintain a he althy acid-base balance in the body. Thanks to it, we will get rid of such ailments as:

  • headaches
  • lack of energy
  • constant fatigue
  • returning runny nose
  • flu

We will not get contractions after running short distances and there will be no moments when we feel that we cannot catch our breath. An alkaline diet also has a positive effect on our mental condition - nervousness and excessive irritability disappear.
