My little nephew (one year and two months old) had hydronephrosis and a giant ureter. In two weeks, he is to have cystography and renoscintigraphy done. Is it painful? Is it possible to get rid of hydronephrosis without surgery?

The causes of hydronephrosis and giant ureter may be different - if the cause are posterior urethral valves (a defect that occurs only in boys), then the treatment consists in removing the valves. If the cause of the abnormalities is bladder dysfunction, treatment is only pharmacological. As for the research - cystography (examination of the bladder and urethra) is unpleasant because it requires the catheter to be inserted into the bladder through the urethra. The catheter fills the bladder with contrast and takes X-ray pictures while urinating. Resintigraphy is a test that evaluates the kidneys and their emptying. Contrast is introduced intravenously.
