Ostródzko-Elbląski Channel is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Warmia and Mazury. Its main section is over 80 km long. The route from Ostróda to Elbląg (or vice versa) is covered by ships throughout the day. The construction of the canal is a mastery of engineering art. During its construction, an innovative device was used for dragging ships on special slipways over the grass. It is the only place in Europe where you can travel uphill by ship on special rails.
Olsztyn is the capital of the Warmian-Masurian region. It has a picturesque Old Town, a planetarium and a castle that was once administered by Nicolaus Copernicus.
Grunwald is a famous battlefield near Olsztynek. Every year, on July 15, young people from knights' brotherhoods meet here to play a historic spectacle, referring to the event of 1410. In Olsztynek there is an open-air museum of rural architecture in Warmia and Mazury.
Mikołajki is the summer capital of Polish sailors. The town was built on an isthmus between two lakes. In the centrally located square there is a fountain with a figurine of a big fish - King Sielawy - of the Mikołajki coat of arms. Another fish - also in the crown - was chained - according to the legend of the King of Sielawy - with chains to the pillar of the bridge. The ships of the white fleet depart from the port of Mikołajki for cruises on Śniardwy - the largest Polish lake.You can also sail from here to Ruciane, as well as to distant Giżycko.
During inclement weather, we can use the aquapark, located in the largest hotel in Poland, Gołębiowski. The surroundings of Mikołajki are full of tourist attractions. Galindia is located on the shores of Lake Bełdany. It is a settlement where we will get to know what the life of the original inhabitants of these areas - the Galindian tribes - looked like centuries ago.
Kadzidło is a tiny village where the first wild animal park in Poland was established. In a large area, animals are bred in areas close to natural. In the settlement, "Oberża pod psem" is fashionable among gourmands, where, after visiting the zoologist, you can go for tasty dumplings.
Krutynia is the most beautiful of the Masurian rivers. Its 100 km long stream becomes a water route for thousands of kayaks in the summer season. The Skrutynia canoeing trips last about 7 days. You can find accommodation in well-developed waterfront hostels, e.g. in Sorkwity. Babiętach, Spychów and in Zgon. In the vicinity of the village of Krutyń, the river is under reserve protection. It flows through a beautiful ravine and is so shallow that only kayaks or special pebbles can move on it. Freshwater sponges live in Poland only in Krutynia. They are under protection. You mustn't even touch them.
Wierzba nad Bełdany is famous for herds of wild horses. Polish ponies, or tarpans, are gentle and do not avoid contact with tourists.
Gałkowo has a horse stud where children can take riding lessons in the saddle. Also in Markseew, in the former forester's lodge, children can participate in activities with horses.
