Skirts have a long history in fashion. Until the late Middle Ages, they were the lower part of the dress, connected to the bodice. Interestingly, in peasant and bourgeois fashion, they first became "independent" as a separate outfit. The skirt plus blouse set gained popularity only in the 1830s. However, we are talking about skirts treated today as maxi. It was the 20th century that began to shorten them, so that today you can choose from various options - from mini to maxi. Mature ladies should act consciously with both the length and the cut. Here are some tips on how to do it!

Skirts and body type

First, a handful of universal tips on how to match a skirt to your body type. These tips apply to women of all ages, including seniors:

  • Pear-type figure

She is distinguished by narrow shoulders and wider hips and thighs. So you should take care of the right proportions. When it comes to skirts, the trapezoidal and A-shaped ones work best, because they effectively mask wider hips and thighs. The best lengths are at least to the knees (the thighs are less visible) and the cut emphasizes the waistline. It is worth avoiding pleated skirts - they can optically widen your hips and thighs.

  • Figure-type apple

Usually accompanied by wide hips, massive breasts and a poorly defined waistline. High-waisted flared skirts with a seam at the waist are ideal. Mature ladies can also go for asymmetrical skirts - they effectively rejuvenate, and at the same time distract from the shortcomings of the figure. What to Avoid? You must choose pencil skirts carefully.

  • Hourglass figure

Its hallmark is a proportional silhouette with a distinct indentationwaist, therefore it is considered an ideal figure. Its owners are quite lucky, because virtually every skirt will look good - both pencil, trapezoidal and flared. It is worth emphasizing the waist line and avoiding too tight or too loose models. Mature ladies with an hourglass figure can also wear shorter skirts without fear.

  • Column-type figure

Also known as a rectangle or not very nicely "tomboy", it is distinguished by a similar width on the lines of the shoulders, waist and hips. Holders of such a silhouette look good in pencil, tulip and so-called skirts. Christmas balls. It is worth trying to well emphasize the waist line. If you have very skinny legs, avoid flared skirts as your legs may appear even thinner and disproportionate to your figure.

Skirts - what length for mature ladies?

The "safest" skirt lengths for adults are midi and maxi. It's better to avoid mini skirts - they can be too provocative. Despite the fact that customs are becoming more and more liberalized, the mini styling is still badly received.

And what is the midi length? Most often, slightly above the knee or to the middle of the calves. This cut is coming back into favor with the retro fashion. So sometimes it may turn out that by choosing a midi skirt for yourself, you will even be able to travel back to your youth.

On the other hand, the maxi length, more or less up to the ankles, works well for mature ladies who do not necessarily want to expose their legs. It is worth remembering that a maxi skirt does not have to be formal. It is enough to mention the fashionable hippie and boho costumes of this length. On the other hand, light, airy fabrics will allow you to feel comfortable in a maxi skirt even in hot weather.

Pencil skirts for adults

Pencil skirts perfectly fit the figure. In addition, they work well both in formal and everyday stylizations. In fact, in their case, you can even be tempted by the length of the mini, but it is safer to choose the version that ends above or below the knee. In this way, the calves can be nicely emphasized.

And how to visually rejuvenate with such a skirt? The best choice is a light, pastel color, an asymmetrical cut or an opening, frills and pleats. A common choice is a black pencil skirt, but here there is a risk that the age will be too … emphasized. A good alternative to black is gray or navy blue.

A-line skirts for ladies 50+ and 60+

A-line skirts are a good alternative to pencil ones. So it's worth choosing if they match the typesilhouettes. However, the good news is that hardly anyone looks bad in them! Trapezoidal skirts perfectly mask imperfections in the hips or thighs, make the figure slender and - importantly in the case of mature ladies - optically rejuvenate. You can choose from plain or patterned, straight or asymmetrical skirts.
