Diosmin is a component of drugs used in the treatment of venous insufficiency, varicose veins of the legs and anus, lymphoedema and as an adjunct in the treatment of bedsores. How does diosmin work on veins? What are the benefits of using diosmin and the possible side effects?

Diosminis a component of drugs called phlebotropic or phlebotonic, which means they have a beneficial effect on the veins. Diosmin improves the tension of the vessel walls and helps in the fight against varicose veins. It reduces the feeling of heavy legs and swelling, and is helpful in the treatment of hemorrhoids. This substance was isolated in 1925, and the first preparation containing non-micronized diosmin was delivered to pharmacies in 1971. It was used in the treatment of venous disease and haemorrhoids. At the end of the 1980s, micronizeddiosmin(with very small particles) appeared, which is better absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Thanks to this, despite the use of lower doses, the appropriate therapeutic effect is maintained.

Diosmina - action

Diosmin is a natural biflavonoid isolated primarily from citrus fruits (flesh, skins and seeds) and plants from the rutaceae family (e.g. tuberous leprosy). It is currently obtained synthetically. The positive effect of diosmin has been confirmed in clinical trials.

  • has anti-swelling properties, reduces the permeability of blood vessel walls, strengthens venous tonus (wall tension), improves blood circulation in capillaries, has anti-inflammatory properties.
  • increases lymphatic drainage, increasing the movement (peristalsis) of the lymph vessels and lymph flow. Thanks to this, it reduces swelling, a feeling of heaviness and fatigue in the legs, burning, nagging itching and night cramps.
  • has a positive effect on the elasticity of the vessels and therefore it is used in the treatment of venous circulation insufficiency and haemorrhoids
  • Another feature is the inhibition of the secretion of histamine - a substance that dilates the venous vessels and increases their permeability, which is conducive to the formation of edema.

Micronized diosmin - advantages

The best therapeutic effects are achieved by using micronized diosmin, i.e. one with significantly reduced particles. The effect of micronization is more effective absorption of the active substance.

Diosmin in this form is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract in about 70%, and this onethe substance itself is not subjected to such a process - only 20-30 percent.

Diosmin - possible side effects

Drugs with diosmin are well tolerated in most cases. However, some people may experience:

  • diarrhea,
  • indigestion,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • dizziness and headaches,
  • feeling unwell,
  • rash,
  • pruritus,
  • hives.

People who are allergic or hypersensitive not only to diosmin itself, but also to other ingredients contained in specific preparations should also exercise caution.

Diosmin during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Women expecting a baby may take diosmin preparations only under the supervision of a doctor and on his recommendation. However, due to the lack of medical data, they should be discontinued during breastfeeding. It is uncertain whether the active ingredient passes into breast milk.
