One-day surgeryor short-term surgery is an idea developed in the USA and Canada as a solution to the problem of overcrowded hospitals. Such an operation is pure saving. It minimizes the patient's stay in hospital, which usually lasts up to 24 hours. During this time, the patient is admitted to the ward, undergoes surgery, and then goes home.
One-day surgery
Within 1-day surgery, many procedures are performed, the list of which is growing every year. The most popular operations include orthopedics, urology and gynecology. Even endoscopic spine surgeries can be performed in one-day mode.
- Minimally invasive spine surgery, such as removal of a disc nucleus hernia, is performed in just half an hour. The endoscope is inserted into the disc, thus bypassing the spinal canal with delicate structures such as the spinal cord. Thanks to this, complications that occur in the traditional method are avoided, and the patient leaves the hospital on the same day - explains Dr. Monika Mikulicz-Pasler, President of the Management Board of KCM Clinic SA. Short-term surgical procedures also include laser procedures, such as removal of kidney stones and prostate enucleation. These operations are performed using an endoscope. It is a device with a built-in camera that transmits the image of the operating field to the monitor through the optical fiber. - We are the third center in Poland that has started to perform laser enucleation, i.e. removal of prostate hyperplasia. The procedure is minimally invasive and virtually bloodless, and the patient leaves the clinic without a catheter on the second day after the operation - says Dr. Tomasz Maliszewski from KCM Clinic.
One day operations
One-day surgery is already available in many centers. It is possible to perform operations on various types of hernias, haemorrhoids or varicose veins of the lower extremities. Laparoscopic surgery is performedgynecological operations, incl. removal of the cyst from the ovary or gastrointestinal tract, removal of the gallbladder. In one day, you can get rid of the tonsils, get rid of the third tonsil or operate the crooked nasal septum. Dermatological treatments are also performed: removal of superficial skin changes such as atheromas, lipomas, fibromas or pigmented moles, and some aesthetic medicine treatments and plastic surgeries. More and more patients take advantage of the benefits of modern medicine.
Cataract surgery and implantation of intraocular lenses can be performed using the so-called micro-cuts with the most modern Bausch + Lomb Stellaris device. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and the patient can go home one hour after the surgery.
Surgical arthroscopy of the knee joint is a very popular procedure in recent years when it comes to short-term surgery. After the procedure, the patient stays in the orthopedic ward for a maximum of one day, and after returning home, he changes the dressing himself. After about 2 weeks, a follow-up visit takes place, during which the sutures are removed.
Who can benefit from one-day surgery?
Qualification for one-day surgery requires multiple diagnostic tests. Most often, the patient is referred for consultation to several specialists who assess his he alth and agree to perform a given procedure in a short-term mode. It is obligatory to have an EKG, morphology, sugar level tests and coagulation tests. Each patient is treated individually and the doctor may order other tests. Not all patients can benefit from one-day surgery. Contraindication to treatments in this mode may be, for example, diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. Also, chronic respiratory diseases, epilepsy and hematological diseases may be a contraindication to day surgery. Such procedures are also not performed in patients over 70 years of age.
Advantages of one-day surgery
This operating procedure has many advantages for both the hospital and patients. The most important of them is the shortening of the waiting time for the procedure, as the patient does not require hospitalization and therefore no place in the ward. The stay in the hospital is reduced to an absolute minimum, thus reducing the risk of infections and reducing the patient's stress related to the procedure. Convalescence takes place at home, although the patient must visit the doctor for a follow-up visit.
