We are happy to visit pump rooms in spas. But healing waters, although available to everyone, are not suitable for quenching thirst. They work like medicine and should only be drunk after consulting a doctor.

Healing watersbelong to natural groundwater.

Waters classified as medicinal usually have much more minerals than others (from 2000 to 24,000 mg / l) and this is why they have strong therapeutic properties.

They come from deep aquifers isolated from pollution of the external environment, therefore they are originally clean, have a constant neutral chemical composition and a high content of certain minerals. The elements contained in them create compounds in various concentrations and proportions (e.g. calcium and magnesium may be present in the amount of several grams per liter of water, sodium - even a dozen). Some waters also contain gases: carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, radon.

Healing waters: types

The most popular healing waters occurring in Poland are:

  • sorrel containing calcium, sodium bicarbonates and carbon dioxide;
  • ferrous sorrels, which also provide iron compounds, and alkaline;
  • sodium chloride waters which, in addition to sodium chloride, contain iodine, bromine and iron;
  • sulfur waters - apart from sulfur compounds, they often contain sodium chloride.

Depending on the content of minerals and their proportion to one another, they bring relief in many diseases. They improve metabolism, help heal peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, kidney disease and fight diabetes. Healing waters are most often drunk during spa treatment (those drunk directly from the spring are most beneficial), which usually lasts 21 days. But in the case of some chronic diseases (gastrointestinal tract, kidneys), treatment must be continued at home, buying water recommended by a doctor (in a bottle or carton) at a specialist store or pharmacy. However, only a few of the healing waters are available outside the pump room.

How healing waters work

Healing waters have a significant impact on the physiology of the body. They can neutralize or acidify the stomach contents, increase or reduce urine output andchange its pH. They accelerate the work of the intestines, affect the water and electrolyte balance, and supplement the deficiency of specific minerals. That is why, when choosing a healing water, you should not be guided only by the taste or opinion of others. Doing so is quite risky. Just because water has helped someone, doesn't mean it will help you as well. If you choose it wrongly or overdose it, it can be harmful instead of improving your well-being and he alth.

This will be useful to you

  • Particular care should be taken in waters high in sodium. Sodium is a very useful element because it prevents dehydration of the body and maintains the acid-base balance. The problem is that generally too muchwe s alt it and the excess sodium is harmful. People on a s alt-free diet should avoid sodium chloride water.
  • Patients with arterial hypertension, circulatory failure and prone to edema are recommended to use mineral water with a low sodium content from the vicinity of the he alth resorts of Nałęczów or Szczawnica. But remember that by taking diuretics and drinking diuretic water, you can dehydrate your body.
  • People with thyroid problems should not use iodine water on their own. For those at risk of osteoporosis, there are waters with a high calcium content - Słotwinka (he alth resort Krynica-Zdrój) or Wielka Pieniawa (he alth resort Polanica-Zdrój).

But an excess of magnesium can harm kidney patients (they are responsible for the proper concentration of elements in the body), and an overdose of iron can cause stomach problems (constipation).
