Compensation benefitis a type of pre-retirement allowance for teachers. It is paid until retirement age. Who can get a compensation benefit?
Compensation benefit - who is en titled to?
Compensation benefit is granted to a teacher, tutor or other pedagogical employee who was born after December 31, 1948. It is received by people who have not taken up any professional work after the termination of their employment. They are near retirement age, but have not yet reached retirement age, so they are not en titled to a pension.
Compensation benefit - what conditions must be met to receive it?
A teacher who wants to receive a compensation benefit must meet a number of conditions:
- terminate the employment relationship upon your request (the employment relationship may also expire in certain circumstances)
- be at least 55 for women and at least 58 for men at the time of application
- have a sufficient work record of at least 20 years
- prove contributory and non-contributory periods of at least 30 years
The number of years of service does not include:
- unpaid leave
- parental leave
- period during which the teacher was on maternity leave
- the period in which the teacher was on the care allowance
- period when the teacher did not work
- period during which the teacher was on leave forhe alth recovery
- the period during which the teacher was on training leave
- military service
In which educational institutions should you have a documented employment relationship?

How should the employment relationship be terminated?
A compensation benefit may be granted to a person who has applied for termination of employment. If the contract is terminated because the period for which it was concluded expires, the condition for termination of the employment relationship has been met.
The benefit is also granted to people whose employment relationship has ended due to:
- job liquidation
- school liquidation (partial or complete)
- changes to the curriculum making it impossible to hire a full-time teacher
Importantly, lower secondary school teachers who did not find employment due to the closure of lower secondary schools also have the right to a compensation benefit.
Is the compensation benefit available to teachers who work in several schools?
All employers must terminate their employment in order to receive a compensation benefit. This means that teachers employed in several schools have to resign from all positions they hold.
Compensation benefit - what documents do you need to submit?
- application - available for download on the ZUS website or in the regional branch of the Social Insurance Institution
- documents confirming work experience
- documents confirming the period of military service, parental leave, non-agricultural activity
- documents confirming the improvement of qualifications (e.g. period of education at a university)
- documents confirming salary before January 1, 1999
When do you need to submit your documents?
Documents should be submitted no earlier than 30 days before:
- the day on which the teacher meets the conditions for receiving the benefit (e.g. the required age is completed)
- the day he intends to convert to teacher's compensation benefit
Compensation benefit - how long is it due?
The compensation benefit is granted untilwhich:
- the teacher reaches retirement age - 60 for women and 65 for men
- the teacher will be en titled to early retirement
Can I work and receive a compensation benefit at the same time?
If a teacher starts working in an educational institution while receiving the compensation benefit, they will stop receiving the compensation benefit.
What is the compensation benefit?
ZUS calculates the amount of the allowance taking into account:
- life expectancy for a person aged 60
- the sum of the indexed contributions for retirement insurance and the indexed initial capital recorded on the individual ZUS account
The teacher's compensation benefit, however, cannot be lower than the lowest ZUS pension.
Who is en titled to compensation for not using the Compensation Benefit?
Compensation may be received by a teacher who:
- has been working in special conditions or of a special nature for at least 15 years (has documents confirming difficult working conditions)
- has not taken advantage of early retirement, bridging retirement or teachers' compensation benefits.
