My husband has been suffering from paroxysmal hypokalemic paralysis since childhood, which is manifested by periodic paresis of the whole body and a drop in potassium. We have 3 wonderful children, one of whom has had similar symptoms 3 times, it happened with diarrhea. Could this be related to my husband's illness? I was with my daughter in Warsaw for a consultation with a neurologist, but she said that my daughter was too young for detailed examinations.

My potassium levels dropped during the course of the diarrhea, which is likely to have caused symptoms. However, low potassium levels alone can cause similar symptoms. Therefore, it is difficult for me to say what is the cause. I think that diagnostics can be de alt with by Banach or Sobieski neurology. You know the symptoms, the treatment is quite simple - you should add potassium. I also propose to use this for a child. However, I do not know how old it is. Periodic paralysis are included in the so-called channelopathy - damage to the structures responsible for the penetration of ions into the cell. More information can be found in textbooks of neurology - e.g. Meritt, Bradley.
