Minoxidil has a hypotensive effect by activating ATP-dependent potassium channels and reducing the sensitivity of vessels to catecholamines. It also increases water and sodium retention.
Indications for the use of minoxidil
The indication for its use may be the treatment of severe refractory hypertension in combination with a diuretic or beta-blocker.
In this direction it is rarely used. However, it is used in preparations used in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia, because when applied topically, it stimulates the division of hair follicle keranocytes.
Additionally, it influences genes responsible for proliferation and differentiation of hair follicle cells. It inhibits collagen synthesis, thus inhibiting the processes of fibrosis within the hair follicle and dermis.
Minoxidil dosage
Treatment of androgenetic alopecia in men and women consists of applying a 2% or 5% minoxidil solution to the scalp. The solution is applied to the area of baldness in the amount of 1 ml and this activity is repeated twice a day.
Do not use a double dose if you miss one dose.
The first effects of treatment are visible after about 2 months of therapy. Stopping using minoxidil may cause you to lose your hair again. If no improvement is noticed after 4-6 months of use, treatment with minoxidil should be discontinued.
Treatment with minoxidil should only be used in patients between 18 and 65 years of age.
Contraindications and precautions
Contraindication to the use of the preparation is sudden and uneven alopecia, the use of dressings, psoriasis, sunburn, damage to the scalp. Do not use the preparation on shaved scalp and in women who will notice hair growth on the face during the therapy.
Treatment with minoxidil is possible when endocrine causes, systemic diseases and malnutrition are excluded.
Treatment should be discontinued if the patient develops:
- pressure reduction,
- chest pain,
- weakness,
- dizziness,
- sudden weight gain,
- swelling of the feet or hands
Minoxidil should not be used in patients with diseasescardiology, such as:
- hypertension
- or heart rhythm disturbances.
It should also not be combined with drugs used in the treatment of these conditions.
Products containing minoxidil should not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Side effects of minoxidil
The most common side effects include:
- itchy skin,
- baking,
- skin contact allergy,
- folliculitis,
- hypertrichosis (hirsutism, also on the skin of the face),
- peripheral edema,
- weight gain.
