Czernidłak is one of the most original mushrooms found in Poland: it is edible, but under certain conditions, very tasty and even more fragile. How to recognize blackbird and what should you remember when consuming it?
Czernidłak(also known colloquially as agaric, owl, blackbird, doggie) is a common mushroom from the mushroom family. It can be found mainly in autumn, from September to November , on city lawns, clearings, orchards and parks. It usually grows inlarge communitiesup to several dozen individuals.
Among the chernivtsi found in Poland, we can distinguish 3 that are very similar to each other, but - interestingly - belong to different families:
- black cap ( Coprinus comatus )
- black cherry ( Coprinopsis inkaria )
- shining blackberry(Coprinellus micaceus )
Chernivtsi - why is it so unusual?
The most recommendable is the first of them - the black cap, which is a very desirable mushroom due to itsunusual taste(slightly sweet, resembling some veal),unusual healing properties , but alsoexceptional longevity . The black pepper can be eaten for a very short time - only young specimens can be picked (we will recognize them by the fact that they are white and still rolled up), then - as the fungus matures - its hat rapidly curls up and turns intoblack goowhich is actually a spore mass. Interestingly, in the past, this fluid was used to produceink .
The entire process of mushroom maturation sometimes only takes …one day , and its decomposition onlya few hours ! No wonder then that the bird cherry is a gem among mushrooms desired by true gourmets.
Black cap - how to recognize it?
The black cap resembles a kite in appearance, it has a frayed hat and characteristic patches, but it is all white. Usually it grows up to 20 cm. Juveniles are ovoid in shape and closed at the bottom. As it grows, the edges break off and turn upwards. Hata mature specimen is 3-6 cm in diameter. There are dense gills on the underside of the hat. White in juveniles, turning pink with age and then blackening.
When choosing mushroom picking, remember that this mushroom dissolves very quickly, so it must becleaned as soon as possibleandheat treated. Even if left in the refrigerator for several hours, it will turn into black goo.

Common blackberry - is it edible?
Common blackbird is very similar in appearance to cap-shaped, but has a slightlygray hat and fuzzy stripes , but no patches. It grows in similar places to the capricious one and is edible just like it, but under certain conditions -it cannot be combined with alcohol . Then it may turn out to be deadly, and all because of the content ofcoprine , which the capricorn cap is devoid of.
Coprine is a compound that blocks the metabolism of ethyl alcohol, i.e. its breakdown. This can result in severealcohol intoxication(also called coprine intoxication) which manifests itself in:
- reddening of the face,
- hot flashes,
- vomiting,
- headache,
- hallucinations
Interestingly, alcohol cannot be drunk both3 daysbefore eating black pepper, and3 days after , because it works by scientists estimate up to 72 hours.
Glossy blackberry - is it edible?
Glossy blackberry is distinguished by ayellowish-brown hatwith a bell-shaped shape, which is folded and furrowed, covered with shiny grains at the young age of the remnants of the shield. Like other blackberries, it melts shortly after rising.
