Sodium butyrate - it is a s alt of butyric acid, belongs to the group of short-chain fatty acids, which are the main source of energy for colonocytes, i.e. intestinal epithelial cells. It is more stable and has a less unpleasant odor than butyric acid. This compound can be found in small amounts in some foods. It is produced in the large intestine (colon) with the participation of fermentation bacteria. Sodium butyrate can be purchased as capsules or microcapsules over the counter.

Sodium butyrate composition

Sodium butyrate effect

Sodium butyrate is mainly anti-inflammatory. The anti-inflammatory process consists in inhibiting the activity of inflammatory mediators in the intestinal epithelium, and thus inhibiting the activation of NFκB macrophages, which are the most important source of cytokines in the inflammatory process of inflammatory bowel diseases.

This substance has the ability to reduce IL-8 secretion, thus contributing to the blocking of the anti-inflammatory cytokine cascade at the local level.

Sodium butyrate has a trophic effect, accelerates healing and intestinal regeneration. Its functions include inhibiting the activity of histone deacetylase (HDAC), which is an enzyme that packs DNA molecules into tight, compact structures and prevents its expression.

It also stimulates the biosynthesis of mucus in the intestinal epithelium. In addition, its presence in the intestinal lumen allows you to maintain the correct pH, thus protecting the digestive system against the invasion of microorganisms.
