Glass and glass packaging of products are more and more often associated with a he althy lifestyle. What should you know about glass packaging? What are their advantages?
Glasshas many advantages. Firstly, it is chemically inert, which guarantees thatglass packagingwill not have a negative impact on the taste and properties of its contents. This means that the glass components do not penetrate into the product inside and therefore they are completely safe for the consumer. - Glass preserves the taste and vitamins, is a barrier against bacteria, is reusable and, in addition, is an excellent secondary raw material - lists Barbara Grzywacz, a representative of the Bracia Urbanek company, a producer of fruit and vegetable preserves from Łowicz, who joined the campaign to promote glass.
Glass - an insurmountable barrier
The resistance of the glass to external conditions is enormous. Due to their structure, the glass particles are gas-tight. What does it mean? Primarily protection for oxygen-reactive products: glass is a barrier against the ingress of oxygen into the packaging. Glass does not bind and does not absorb foreign substances from the outside of the package or its contents.
Advantages of glass - no "chemicals"
Glass is also free from bisphenol A, ITX, phthalate esters, acetaldehyde and other potentially harmful chemicals. This is especially important in the case of allergy sufferers, children, the elderly and pregnant women for whom the safety of the product is an extremely important issue.
For the sake of the environment - glass recycling
Glass is perfect for re-use - we can use it to store food and prepare home preserves. Glass is also an excellent recyclable material and is 100% suitable. for recycling. The resulting products are still of the same quality and maintain the same parameters as at the beginning. Thanks to the recycling of used bottles and jars, we obtain new glass, while saving energy and the environment (20% less pollution gets into the air and 50% less into water). To obtain the highest quality glass, we should only put container glass into containers: jars and bottles. Items such as mirrors, light bulbs, windows, heat-resistant dishes, glasses and glasses are not suitable forrecyclable into glass packaging.
What does the glass recycling process look like?
After transporting it to the glassworks, the glass is weighed and goes to the crusher. Large parts are removed, metal parts are pulled out with a magnet, light waste enters a special vacuum cleaner, and laser light detects non-transparent parts, e.g. ceramics.
After cleaning the cullet, the process of melting it in the glass melting tank takes place. The glass melted and clarified in a glass furnace goes to the feeder, where the process of forming a glass drop, which is shaped like a bottle or a jar, takes place. The molds created in this way go to the lehr, where the lowering of the temperature causes the jars and bottles to gain strength parameters, and in the next stage they are refined thanks to appropriate processes.
Become a friend of glass!
There is the Glass Friends Movement in Poland, supported by the Ardagh Group, whose main mission is to promote glass packaging and glass recycling. At friendsofglass.com/en, you can find all sorts of glass curiosities and recycling tips.
