I have a son who was born without a hand. Could it be a consequence of untreated Lyme disease, resulting from ignorance that I was sick with it?
Lyme disease in the first trimester of pregnancy may affect the risk of defects in a child. It does not mean, however, that it is the only cause. The cause of the defects in a child can be infectious diseases, environmental factors such as chemicals, X-rays, stimulants, certain medications, systemic diseases of the mother (diabetes), fever. The above factors, like Lyme disease, increase the risk of defects, but do not cause them 100%. In many cases, the direct cause cannot be established.
