Almost one million sick people in Europe …
The incidence of Lyme disease, also known as Lyme disease or tick-borne disease, is rising dramatically. According to estimates, almost a million people in Europe are infected. In Poland, more than 20,000 were diagnosed. cases, but the number can be much larger.
The scale of the problem is evidenced by the fact that in November 2022, the Committee on the Environment, Public He alth and Food Safety of the European Parliament unanimously adopted a motion for a resolution establishing cooperation between EU countries in the early diagnosis and prevention of Lyme disease.
Earlier this year, the US Congress decided to allocate additional funding to fight and research this insidious disease. The oldest known case of a man infected with Lyme disease is the so-called The Ice Man, discovered in the Italian Alps, but only in 1981, the American scientist Willy Burgdorfer, isolating from the tick spirochetes of bacteria, later called Borrelia burgdorferi, proved the relationship between the tick bite and the disease.

Difficult to diagnose
Lyme disease is a disease that is difficult to diagnose because it can disguise itself as symptoms associated with many other diseases, such as the flu. A person infected by a tick may suffer from, among others, headaches, joint and muscle aches, chronic fatigue, low mood, irritability, problems with concentration.
In its early stages, this disease can be cured with properly conducted antibiotic therapy. Undiagnosed, it carries serious complications that require
many years of therapy. problems with the nervous system - palsy of the cranial nerves, nerve root paralysis, meningitis, arthritis, muscle inflammationcardiac.
Ticks are found not only in the forest and in the meadow, but also in the city park and on the lawn in front of the house, and even in attics. Their peak of activity falls in the period from May to September, but they can be encountered for almost twelve months. The likelihood of transmitting Lyme disease spirochetes increases with each hour of tick presence on humans: after 48 hours it reaches 50%.
Ticks can also infect other diseases, such as: anaplasmosis, human neoehrlichiosis, babesiosis, bartonellosis, Q fever, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). There is no effective vaccine against Lyme disease, so the only remedy is awareness.
