Iodineis a 3% solution of iodine in 90% ethyl alcohol with 1% potassium iodide as a stabilizing agent. It has a dark yellow, brown color. It is perfect for the fight against microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, therefore it is effective in the fight against skin diseases, e.g. acne or mycosis.
However, iodine should not be used in children under 3 years of age, patients with tuberculosis and heart disease, with hypersensitivity to iodine and with thyroid diseases, especially in the case of hyperthyroidism.
The bactericidal effect of iodine is also enhanced by hydrogen iodide, which is formed from the combination of iodine and hydrogen. Iodine is applied externally to the skin and mucous membranes. In the past, this liquid was very popular in beauty salons, but it has been replaced by modern (and usually more expensive) skin care products. But it still happens that ladies wash their face with water with a few drops of iodine, which not only has a disinfecting effect (reduces blemishes), but also improves skin tone.
Iodine - properties and application
1. Since the preparation is deadly against bacteria, viruses and fungi, it is useful as an antiseptic in:
- skin abrasions, small wounds - remember that only the area is washed, open wounds should not be touched
- pharyngitis, tonsillitis removal - as a rinse aid (3 drops per glass of water)
- water disinfection - which is useful, for example, during exotic travels, when we are exposed to bacterial flora that is unfavorable to us; dissolve 3 drops of iodine in a liter of water to neutralize the unpleasant aftertaste, you can add a little lemon juice or a few drops of vitamin C to the treated water and wait 30 minutes before consumption
- treatment of skin mycosis
2. BecauseIodine also has a cosmetic use on its coloring properties. It can work like a self-tanner, but evenly distributing iodine solution (a drop of iodine per liter of water, once a week) on the skin is very difficult and often ends with unsightly streaks.
Iodine or Lugol's liquid?
Some people think that iodine and Lugol's solution are two different names for the same preparation. However, this is not true. Iodine is a spirit iodine solution, while Lugol's solution is water. After the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded in 1986, Lugol's liquid was ordered in 1986 to block the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine over Europe.
Iodine in the treatment of hypothyroidism
Supporters of natural therapies use iodine to treat hypothyroidism. If the body is deficient in iodine, a piece of the skin should be smeared with the preparation. The more iodine the body needs, the faster the stain will be absorbed. In the following days, iodine will be absorbed slower and slower, until it finally stops at all, which means that the body is already saturated with this element.
