Setting up an account on Facebook can make it easier for a senior to contact his family and establish new relationships. How to create a Facebook account step by step
Creating an account on Facebook may be overwhelmed by a senior. Therefore, it is good to do it together to explain what are the principles of social media. If we devote time to grandma or grandpa and explain what functionalities they should pay attention to, which options are worth using and which are better not to touch, we can overcome their fear of new technologies.
Where to start your adventure with Facebook?
To set up a Facebook account, you must first set up an email. The mailbox will be useful for registering on other websites, for receiving newsletters from your favorite magazines or websites, and for making purchases in online stores.
How to set up a Facebook account step by step?
1. To set up an account on Facebook, go to the home page of the website http://pl-pl.facebook.com and click "registration". 2. Then provide your data: name, surname and e-mail address 3. Enter the password (it is worth writing it down in an important place so as not to lose it) 4. We choose the gender5. We enter the date of birth 6. Click "register"
After clicking "register" a verification field will open. Rewrite the text that will appear above in it. After rewriting, click "register" again.
What information do we need to provide on the website?
The account is already created but not activated yet. Before we activate them, we can use the several-stage completion of our profile.
1. In "Step 1", Facebook tells us our friends. How does it do? Finds contacts from e-mail and suggests who of the loved ones already has a Facebook profile. Thanks to this, we can easily invite them to our friends. We can also leave it for later - just click "Skip this stage". 2. In "Step 2" we provide information about your education and employment. We can also skip this stage if we prefer to do it in our free time or if we do not want to provide such personal information3. In "Step 3" you can add your profile picture. To do this, just click on the "Add photo" field. If we do not want to do this, click "Skip the stage" 4. Then we log into e-mail. We should receive a link with the activation of the Facebook account. It is enough to click on it to make the account active5. From then on, we can log in to Facebook at any time. We can also remember the password so that you do not have to enter it every time
Which functionalities are worth using on Facebook?
When creating a profile, it is worth to reserve certain data immediately so that they are not available to everyone. To do this, expand the menu bar in the right corner of the screen, enter the "Settings" tab and click "Privacy" in the left column.
In this tab, mark:
- who can see our posts (all or just friends)
- who can contact us
- who can see our friends
- who can find us based on their e-mail address
- who can find us by phone number
It is very important to select the options that suit us. Thanks to this, we will limit access to your profile only to selected people.
If we want to change the password on Facebook, we have to go to "Settings" and click the "Security and login" tab. There, we can change the password to access Facebook at any time.
What additional options on Facebook are worth paying attention to?
In the "Settings" in the left column there is also the "Public posts" tab, which is worth using.
We can mark there:
- who can follow us - should our posts be displayed only to friends or to people who are not friends with us, but are following us
- Who can comment on our posts - only friends or friends of friends?
- who can receive notifications about public posts - we can mark the willingness to receive notifications when someone not among our friends starts to follow us and share our content
- who can comment or like public profile information - we mark who can react to our change of profile photo, background photo or profile information. This option may be available only to friends, but also to friends of friends or to all Internet users
- Do we rank comments - if we enable the ranking, the most interesting comments about our profile will be displayed first
- Do we want to link the Facebook account with the Twitter account
Is it worth turning on the "Notifications" option?
There is also a "Notifications" tab in "Settings". We can turn on the option of sound notifications in varioussituations:
- when someone tags us on Facebook
- when someone comments on our post
- when someone of your friends celebrates a birthday
- when there is a new post in the group we belong to
- when someone of your friends starts a fundraiser
- when someone of your friends adds a new post to their story
Important notifications Facebook can also send to our e-mail address or SMS (if we provide our phone number in the "Phone" tab).
In conclusion, setting up a Facebook account is not difficult, as long as we do it with someone who will explain to us the basic options available. At the beginning, it is better not to delve into setting up advertising campaigns on Facebook, games and applications, so as not to scare the senior with the multitude of available options. This may only discourage him from using social media (especially since he is unlikely to be setting up a campaign anyway).
If grandma or grandpa learn the basic ways of using Facebook, they will be able to log in, share posts, use the home panel, then we can show them other possibilities.
Facebook can bring new energy to their lives, allow them to renew old friendships and make new contacts. It also allows you to follow what is happening in the world and comment on events. So let's introduce a senior to the world of new technologies.
