- Vaginal microbial smear: result and interpretation
Vaginal microbial smear, i.e. vaginal cleanliness test, is performed to determine the type of microbial flora in the vagina. Its result informs about the possible existence of vaginitis and the type of inflammation (e.g. fungal, bacterial, trichomoniasis, etc.).

Vaginal microbial smear: preparation for examination
You cannot use vaginal medications or vaginal irrigation a few days before the test. If you are having your period, you must wait for the bleeding to stop.
Vaginal cleanliness test: test procedure
You lie down on the gynecological chair for the examination. The doctor collects your vaginal discharge using a thin wire with a loop (loop) end or a cotton ball (tupfer). Vaginal discharge is collected in several places: from the vestibule and the glands located on them, the urethra, and the vaginal vault. The resulting smear is examined under a microscope. The examination takes several seconds. You will receive the result in the form of a description with the number according to the scale.
Vaginal microbial smear: result and interpretation
Removed vaginal discharge undergoes microscopic evaluation. In order to standardize the diagnoses, an appropriate scale of microbial flora assessment is used. Most often it is a six-point scale (according to Jirovec, Peter and Malek) in the form of Roman numbers from I to VI. They mean respectively:
- I and II - correct condition,
- III - bacterial inflammation,
- IV - gonorrhea,
- VI - fungal inflammation.
