Yuzpe is an emergency contraceptive method (also known as emergency contraception), which consists in taking an increased dose of hormones by swallowing several contraceptive pills at once, after unprotected intercourse. Can it replace Escapelle or Postinor Duo, popular "po" pills? Rather not, because despite the fact that the Yuzpe method is highly effective, gynecologists do not recommend using it.

Yuzpe: what is this method?

Post-coital contraception, otherwise known asemergency contraceptionor post-intercourse contraception are contraceptives that are taken by a woman after risky intercourse, fearing pregnancy. The Yuzpe method (named after the Canadian doctor Albert Yuzpe, who was a promoter of this method in the 1970s) consists in taking the hormones estrogen and progestin in the form of an increased dose of combined contraceptive pills. The effectiveness of the method is 97-98%, but to achieve this effectiveness, you need to take two or four birth control pills (depending on the hormone concentration in a particular pill) and repeat the process after 12 hours. Emergency contraception is most effective in preventing embryo implantation when it is used within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse.

Due to the high probability of complications, the method should not be used without consulting a doctor.

How does the Yuzpe method work?

The method depends on whether the tablets are taken before or after ovulation. Tablets taken before ovulation may inhibit ovulation and affect the endometrium, making implantation difficult. Adopted after ovulation, they hinder implantation of the embryo in the uterine mucosa.

Who uses Yuzpe's method?

Women who cannot see a gynecologist for a pill often choose the Yuzpe method. Doctors do not recommend it, however, due to the complications that such a large dose of hormones taken at once can cause in the body. It is therefore necessary to be aware that swallowing increased amounts of contraceptive pills without medical consultation is a reckless behavior and leads to serious he alth problems.
