You can live a normal life after the transplant

12. Run for the New Life is, as always, a large group of transplant recipients from various social organizations, primarily the Polish Post-Transplant Sports Association. It is these people who prove on a daily basis that you can live a normal life after the transplant. Finally, they are the most important participants of the Nordic walking relay, in which they march together with theater, film, music and cabaret stars, journalists and sportsmen.

Among the starters is Sylwia Szkudlarek, who in 2005 donated a kidney to her son Sebastian, also a participant of the 12th Run for New Life.

- I didn't think about it at all, I trusted the doctors. Looking at sick and suffering children undergoing dialysis, I said "no" !!! I don't want our son to be going through this, not yet. Family transplant was a chance for my son to avoid dialysis. Everyone who has gone through it knows best what life looks like then, it is not so rosy at all

Both my husband and I have undergone donor testing. We were both compatible. Why me? At the time of the transplant, my son was only 7 years old. My kidney was smaller than my husband's, much more suitable for him in size. Lying in the recovery room, I opened my eyes and saw my beloved husband Andrzej. The first thing I heard was the most wonderful message, "Honey, everything worked out. Your kidney took a job for Sebastian. The transplant was successful! " It was one of the happiest days in the life of our family - says Szkudlarek.

- Despite all the adversities that have befallen us, life is beautiful if we respect it properly. If I had to face such a decision in my life, it would be like 13 years ago - says Szkudlarek.

Sylwia Szkudlarek is one of over 50 transplant recipients who we will meet on the route.
